About Add PDF Watermark

Watermarking works by drawing a new layer of text on top of each page's existing content, positioned, rotated and blended at the opacity you choose. It's an additive operation rather than an edit to what's already there, which is why it works regardless of how a particular PDF is structured internally — nothing about the original text or images needs to be located or modified, the watermark is simply painted over it.

That layered approach is what makes watermarking useful for marking draft status, flagging confidential material before circulating it for review, branding a document with a company name across every page, or stamping a preview copy before a final version is released. Because it's applied per page automatically, there's no need to repeat the process across a long document.

It's worth being clear-eyed about what a text overlay does and doesn't do: it's a visible marking, not a security feature. It won't stop someone with PDF editing software from covering, cropping, or removing the watermark layer, and it doesn't restrict copying or printing the underlying content. For genuine access control, password protection or permissions restrictions are the appropriate tools.
