About PDF to Text
A PDF's content stream stores text as a series of positioning and character-showing instructions tied to font and encoding tables, rather than as a plain string. Extraction works by walking through those instructions in the order they appear in the stream and reconstructing the characters they represent, then stitching the result back together page by page. It's a fundamentally different process from OCR, which analyzes pixels in an image to guess what letters are drawn there — this tool only reads text that was already stored as text.
That makes it useful for quickly pulling a quote out of a report, copying contract language into an email, feeding a document's content into a search index, or grabbing text for translation or reuse without retyping it. Because the underlying structure is preserved, character accuracy is generally exact — you get precisely what's embedded in the file.
The main limitation shows up with layout: a content stream's chronological order doesn't always match visual reading order, so multi-column pages, tables, or documents with floating text boxes can come out with lines interleaved or out of sequence. Documents built from unusual font subsets can occasionally produce garbled characters if the font's internal character mapping is nonstandard.
