About WEBP to JPG
WEBP is a relatively young format, and while every current major browser reads it, a surprising number of older tools still don't: some legacy content management systems, older versions of desktop publishing and photo-editing software, certain print workflows, and a handful of platforms that only accept a fixed list of file extensions. Converting to JPG trades WEBP's compression efficiency for near-universal compatibility going back decades.
This conversion typically comes up when an image was downloaded or exported from a modern source in WEBP but needs to go somewhere less flexible — an email attachment, a print shop's upload portal, an older piece of internal software, or a document that only embeds JPG images cleanly. It's a compatibility fix more than a quality upgrade.
Two things are worth knowing about the result: file size will usually increase somewhat since JPG is generally less efficient than WEBP at the same visual quality, and any transparency in the source WEBP file is discarded, since JPG has no alpha channel and fills transparent areas with a solid color instead.
